About Clayton
Clayton is located on the Indian River. It was first known as Bellamy’s Mills after Edmund Bellamy of Vermont who built a mill here in 1824.
Then the name was changed to Clifton and then Clayton. During the first emigrations villages like Clayton were founded based on the water power at the rivers. Typical of these small communities a sawmill and a grist mill were built to serve the local community. This tiny community grew to become around 20 businesses by the 1870s. Situated on what was the main road from Perth to Pembroke it supported all of the necessary businesses to suit travellers and locals.
Despite the changes to roads and businesses, Clayton continues to support the local community by having a baseball diamond, a community hall, boat launch and park.
